Graphing Calculators
Warm Up Activity: This activity introduces several features of SimCalc MathWorlds®. This activity works best as a teacher-led discussion.
Sack Race Activity: In this activity, students will create their own piecewise linear Position vs. Time graph comprised of positive sloped pieces, negative sloped pieces, and pieces with a slope of zero and write an exciting story to mathematically describe their creation. The primary focus of this activity is slope as rate of change, piecewise functions, relating graphs to a story, and intersections of linear functions.
Rockets Activity: At its heart, this activity is about factoring numbers, gaining number sense, and building a quantitative understanding of Velocity as a Rate, as coordinated changes in Position and Time using Rate vs. Time graphs linked to motion. The Rockets Activity can be expanded to lay the base for the two-way Rate-Position connection: the Area "under" the Rate graph determines Distance Traveled, and the Rate is determined by the Slope of the Position graph.
Spreading Apart Activity: In this activity, students will make a motion for a character by defining a linear function for the character. The primary focus is on variations of rate and slope and families of linear functions.
Comparing Motions Activity: In this activity, students will compare a car whose speed is driven by a linear function and a car whose speed is driven by a quadratic function as an introduction to quadratic functions with a focus on rate and differences in position.
