Jim studies student thinking, motivation and identity, and teacher change in mathematics and related fields. He is currently working on two projects engaging teachers in mathematical modeling: 1) With Phoenix Union High School District teachers, they are exploring discrete mathematics and dynamical systems and writing a mathematical modeling course for 4th year of High School; 2) With Middle School teachers in a variety of districts in the Phoenix area they are developing mathematics and science content knowledge through modeling. Jim also continues to work on a major NSF grant charting the longitudinal growth of students' understanding and skill in fractions, rational number, and proportional reasoning.
