John tries to support people interested in fostering and sustaining mathematical thinking in themselves and in others. He is working on the nature and role of attention in the learning and doing of mathematics. This involves such topics as mental imagery, awareness, task design, classroom interaction, prompting of effective reflection in order to learn from the experience generated by engaging in activities and participating in actions with peers and teachers. Through trials, John is investigating how mathematical thinking can be stimulated via e-screens, and how to present mathematical ideas effectively on e-screens.
