The program will run for two weeks. The first week on June 23, 24, 25, 28, & 29. The second week being August 23-27. The last two days will be led by EDC with a
focus on Lesson Study. Each day we will focus on core mathematical ideas that students in upper elementary and middle school must be able to understand. We will work in groups on mathematical challenges, sharing our solutions and strategies for solving these problems. The groups will mix teachers from different grades for two main purposes: 1) Teachers in grades 6-8 understand what teachers in grades 4-5 are teaching and how they are developing core ideas such as multiplicative reasoning and rational number sense which are skills necessary for teachers introducing core ideas such proportional reasoning and linear models in grade 6-8, 2) teachers in grade 4-5 understand what skills they need to teach to better prepare their students for middle school. We will also introduce new software and classroom manipulatives to enhance your students' knowledge and understanding of important mathematical ideas. We will use them to explore conjectures and develop mathematical reasoning and generalization of ideas. Finally, we will continually address good teaching styles, problem-solving strategies, and methods of good practice to effectively integrate our on-going work into our professional everyday activities. |
